Summertime is Dragonfly Time

Damselflies and Dragonflies. They’re both out in great numbers during the Summer.

A macro lens would be of great help with these critters; that is, if they’d let you get close to them. They don’t, so you’ll probably want to use a telephoto lens for dragonfly shots.

They seem to always be in the clutter…leaves, reeds, twigs, debris; somewhere near a water body.
If you can, photograph them in a garden with flowers behind them.

If there are no flowers in the area, just go buy an orange wheel barrow and put it 40 feet behind the dragonfly if there’s not one there already.
